Build Kde4 Again
Built kde 4.4.3 using instructions here
Those instructions contain paches to disable plasma tooltips which apparently will get into kde 4.4.4.
They also contain patches to fix display settings being lost on logout which has not as yet been accepted as being a problem.
The instructions are using a patch to polkit-1 to use shadow for authentication so that PAM is not a requirement. Slackware uses the patch and it seems to work fine. Both Slackware and LFS hold philosophies that PAM is an unnecessary level of complexity that shouldn't be installed unless it is absolutely known to be needed.
The instructions use a notation I have called "custom-tools" style in previous posts.
You can copy/paste what is in the blocks between #COMMANDS and #COMMANDS-END.
I posted a visual documentation of settings that made sense to me and speeded up kde a bit

I have read a few good stuff here. Certainly worth bookmarking for revisiting. I wonder how much effort you put to create such a fantastic informative site.
